Safeguarding and Child Protection

Safeguarding Awareness

Radcliffe Primary School is fully committed to promoting the health, safety and well-being of all children who attend this school.  The school will work closely with other professions, schools, Bury LEA and the Department for Education to protect and promote children’s health and safety.

Ofsted has defined the term ‘safeguarding pupils’ as:

‘The process of protecting pupils from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables pupils to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.’

  • The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
  • The school recognises that as school staff are in regular and frequent contact with pupils, they are particularly well-placed to observe signs of abuse or neglect.
  • The school is aware of the responsibilities which all staff have with regard to the protection of pupils from abuse and from inappropriate and inadequate care.  Therefore, the school is committed in reacting in accordance agreed procedures in all cases where there is concern.

Operation Encompass

Our school has been given the opportunity to take part in a Police Initiative that is supported by Bury Safeguarding Board.

The project, Operation Encompass, has been designed to provide early reporting to schools of any domestic abuse incidents that occur outside of school but which might have an impact on a child attending school the following day. This information will be shared on school days during the school term. When incidents occur on a Friday, Saturday or a Sunday, the police will contact the relevant school the following Monday.

A nominated member of school staff, known as a Key Adult, will be trained to liaise with the police. At Radcliffe Primary School our Key Adult is Miss Belinda McKenna. They will be able to use information that has been shared with them, in confidence, to ensure that the school is able to support children and their families. Information will be shared where it is identified that a child or young person was present, witnessed or was involved or usually resides at the property where the domestic abuse incident occurred.

We always endeavour to offer the best support possible to our pupils and believe that Bury Encompass is going to be beneficial and supportive for all concerned children and families.
