Radcliffe Primary School

Radcliffe Primary School provides a broad and balanced curriculum for all children. The National Curriculum is our starting point for planning that meets the specific needs of individuals and groups of children. When planning, teachers set suitable learning challenges and respond to children’s diverse learning needs. Some children have barriers to learning that mean they have special needs and require particular action by the school.

These requirements are likely to arise as a consequence of a child having special educational needs. Teachers take account of these requirements and make provision, where necessary, to support individuals or groups of children and thus enable them to participate effectively in curriculum and assessment activities.

 What is SEND?

 ‘A child or young person has SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

(a) have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or

(b) have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.’

 (SEND Code of Practice 2014)

This is a broad definition covering all children and young people from 0-25 years of age.

The Code of Practice 2014 identifies 4 main areas of need:

1. Communication and Interaction

2. Cognition and Learning

3. Social, Mental and Emotional health

4. Sensory and/ or Physical Needs

From September 2014 all schools are required to provide information to parents about how they will support children and their families if a child is deemed to have special educational needs. The provision and support offered at Radcliffe Primary School is constantly evolving and adapting to the needs of its pupils. As a result the information on these pages concerning SEN will be reviewed and updated regularly.
